The 2023 March Madness Tournament has been filled with massive upsets through the Round of 64 and Round of 32. With so many upsets in the first two rounds, it’s time to look back and see the potential profit that could have been made betting on those March Madness underdogs.
Starting in the first round, the biggest upset of them all was #16 seeded Fairleigh Dickerson beating the #1 seeded Purdue Boilermakers 63-58 to become just the second #16 seeded team to upset a #1 seed in March Madness.
Betting $100 on FDU to pull off the upset would have profited a massive $2,000 with their 2000 odds.
The big payouts did not stop there with #15 Princeton taking down the #2 Arizona Wildcats to become just the 10th #15 seed to win a first-round March Madness matchup. Princeton had 730 odds ($100 to win $730) to win the game.
One upset in the first round that many had correct on their NCAA Tournament brackets was #13 Furman over #4 Virginia. Furman had 200 ($100 to win $200) odds to beat the Cavaliers and did so on a go-ahead 3-pointer with under 5 seconds left on the clock.
Friday, March 24 (Sweet 16)
Saturday, March 25 (Elite 8)
Sunday, March 26 (Elite 8)
Saturday, April 1 (Final Four)
Monday, April 3 (National championship game)
Virginia has been prone to upsets in their last five March Madness appearances losing in either of the first two rounds in four of those appearances while all of them have come as a top-5 seeded team.
Another notable first-round upset that took place was the #11 Pitt Panthers downing #5 Iowa State with 170 ($100 to win $170) moneyline odds. Many were counting Pitt out as they were a First Four team and fought hard to obtain the #11 seed.
Moving on to the second round, the Cinderella story continued for Princeton after they defeated Missouri, however, oddsmakers weren’t going to make the same mistake twice and listed them with 230 odds ($100 to win $230).
Princeton went on to win the game by 15 points and now have a Sweet 16 matchup with the Creighton Blue Jays and have 390 odds ($100 to win $390) to win.
The #1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks also fell victim to an upset at the hands of the #8 Arkansas Razorbacks who were given 160 odds ($100 to win $160) in the game.
Kansas was amongst the favorites to win the tournament after winning the National Championship just a year ago. The Razorbacks are now a slight underdog again in the Sweet 16 to UConn at 145 ($100 to win $145).
