Even with Rob Gronkowski’s latest assertion that he would not return to the NFL, when it comes to Gronk (and even TB-12 himself) — there seems to be a natural inclination to shy away from galvanizing such statements.
That being said, this time it does have a more convictive aura about it.

When Gronk announced his 2nd retirement last month, his agent Drew Rosenhaus attempted to get one of his expensive loafers in the proverbial door before it was closed.
Rosenhaus — no doubt echoing the the mindset of millions — told ESPN, "he wouldn’t be surprised to see his client return to the field if Brady came calling." Rosenhaus also told NBC’s PFT, “In my opinion he isn’t done.
I would not be surprised to see him come back down the road.”
Perhaps shooting that down like a delusional fat guy getting door matted by hotties at the club, Gronkowski seemed resolute in updating the sports world on his personal itinerary.
Speaking at an event held yesterday by Ice Shaker (one of his business stakes) in Boston, Gronk told ESPN’s Mike Reiss that he is "done with football." “Love the game – loved the game.
Definitely blessed with all the opportunities the game of football has given me and the relationships. I’ve been in New England for nine seasons and in Tampa for two. I’m done with football.
I’m stepping my feet into the business world, the business ventures and just seeing what’s out there and where I can find my place.”
Unfortunately, despite the overtones of certitude associated with these comments, one may still find it difficult to slam the gavel down on Rob’s amazing career.
First Ballot HOFer
In his 11 seasons, Gronkowski firmly established himself as an all-time great at Tight End. The former Arizona Wildcat and 42nd pick in the 2nd round of the 2010 NFL Draft, currently stands 3rd in receiving TDs (92), fifth in receiving yards (9,286), and 10th in receptions (621).
Rob amassed 98 catches for 1,389 yards and scored 15 TDs in the postseason. Gronk has three Super Bowl Rings with the Patriots (2014, 2017 2018), and one with Tampa Bay in 2020.
In addition to his offensive prowess, Gronkowski was just as adept at pass-blocking. When healthy, the guy was simply a beast for opposing coordinators and defenses around the league.
Why This Really Might Be It
Gronkowski endured a decade-plus of punishment that led to frequent injuries. Rob has a roll-call of back problems dating back to his days at Arizona U. He missed the entire 2009 season with a bulging disk that required surgery.
As a TE with New England in 2012, he sat five games after fracturing his forearm, and later tweaked that injury in the postseason. Gronk missed the first seven games in 2013 recovering from back and forearm operations.
In another unfortunate instance of fate, Gronkowski tore his right ACL and MCL versus Cleveland that December. He didn’t return until the start of the 2014 season.
The one-time star of Woodland Hills HS in PA also had hamstring, concussion and lung issues.
Much like Tom Brady, Gronk has reiterated his desire to embrace business after football. Rob’s brother Chris Gronkowski was seen hawking Ice Shaker Bottles on Shark Tank.
The proposition lured bags of cash from Mark Cuban and Alex Rodriguez – who made a joint investment of $150k in exchange for 15% of the company. Rob also has ongoing business relationships with several companies which include T-Mobile, USAA and Manscaped.
One has to ponder what gravity a late-November call from Tom Terrific would carry if the Bucs are in prime Super Bowl contention.
Brady and Gronk together compiled a 110-31 record in the regular season, and went 17-5 in the playoffs.
Tom’s overall stats are marginally down without Gronk’s presence on the field – likely prompting average Joe fan to anticipate this very call from Brady notwithstanding Rob’s apparent inkling to stay retired this time around.
However, if we’ve learned anything from the most dynamic duo in NFL history, we know the definition of "it’s over" carries an element of ambiguity.
