Man Trekking to Qatar for World Cup 2022, Goes Missing
A Spanish soccer fan who was trekking to Doha, Qatar, ahead of the World Cup is suspected to be missing. As his family reported, he last contacted them almost three weeks ago, a day after he entered Iran. The plan is to reach the tournament venue on foot from Madrid to Doha, a total distance of 4,300 miles.
Santiago Sanchez is a skilled trekker and ex-paratrooper. His parents told the media they last heard him through an audio message on 2nd October, just a day after entering Iran.
He expressed his willingness to go to Iran’s capital Tehran to join in a television interview and then reach Bandar Abbas port in the southern part to board a boat to Qatar.
The journey would end in Qatar before the first World Cup match of Spain on 23rd November. He didn’t make any contact through the first few days as he had told his family. But after a while, his disappearance forced them to lodge a missing complaint on 17th October.
Before crossing Iran, Sanchez hiked 15 countries on his way and shared his travel experience on his Instagram handle. The AP interviewed him from Iraq’s Sulaymaniyah, a Kurdish city in the northeastern part. He depicted the idea of the journey as to motivate and inspire people to go far away with the bare minimum wherewithal.
Spain’s Foreign Ministry has no information on this matter to date. The Spanish ambassador is dealing with the disappearance of Sanchez in Tehran. We got no comments from the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
Celia Cogedor, Sanchez’s mother, has expressed deep pain, seeking the help of the officials. She added that Sanchez is not linked with any propaganda and the only motivation behind his travel was the football World Cup. Previously, Sanchez has traveled the same route on the bike from Madrid to Saudi.
Sanchez’s missing report has come amidst the widespread unrest due to the death of Mahsa Amin against the Iranian government. The death sparked a worldwide protest against the conservative rulers of the country.
The moral police arrested her for not wearing the hijab appropriately. Later, Masah was found dead in custody, suspiciously. Right now, Iran is facing the worst revolt ever.
The Qatar World Cup has attracted too many controversies from earlier this year. From the situation of human rights in the hosting nation to the censorship of the international media, it has seen unprecedented disputes. The tournament is kicking off on 20th November.
