The Lakers (9-9 SU, 6-12 ATS) come to Madison Square Garden for the first of back-to-back games (they play Indy on Wed.) and will be without LeBron James as he serves a 1-game suspension. The opening line the Knicks -3.5 with an O/U of 214.5.
James delivered an aggressive down-swipe of his left elbow that opened a gash over the left eye of Piston’s big-man Isiah Stewart. The aftermath was an embarrassing melee that had the potential to turn into what we saw with Ron Artest 17-years ago at the Palace, also in the Motor City. Stewart was slapped with 2-games for repeated attempts to confront James and escalating the situation.
Anthony Davis and Carmelo Anthony were instrumental in overcoming a 17-point deficit in Detroit after LeBron was ejected. Davis finished with 30 points, 10 boards, 6 assists and five blocks in the road win.
With Bron’ sitting, more emphasis will again be on Talen Horton-Tucker, Melo, Russ and the bench to fill the basket in his absence. The Lakers have a very recognizable roster and can put up points, but rank in the bottom-fourth of the league in many defensive categories — giving up an average of 118
ppg in their last three on this road trip. The Lakers have lost 3 of their last four visits to the Big Apple and failed to cover in all four.
The Knicks have come back to the field after bolting out of the gate last month. They currently sit a game above .500 (9-8 SU, 7-10 ATS) entering this contest with Los Angeles. New York is 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Julius Randle is the resident stud averaging 20p/10r/5a in 35 mpg. The rest of the scoring is nicely balanced with Barrett, Fournier, Rose, Walker and Burks. Forward Obi Toppin — along with bigs Mitchell Robinson and Nerlens Noel — will look to take advantage of LeBron’s absence. Taj Gibson’s availability is still unknown.
Lakers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games vs an above .500 team and 6-20 ATS in their last 26 games following a SU win.
Knicks are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home contests and their last seven overall have gone UNDER the total.
