The Second game of the College Football playoff game features two programs that have won titles before, but have not been at center stage for a long time. The Texas Longhorns make their debut in the College Football Playoff after many years of not being “BACK”.
This year they knocked the door down with a win at fellow semi-finalist Alabama and weathered the Big 12 storm with just a loss to Rival Oklahoma. They go through a few games without star QB Quinn Ewers and are finally ready to take the stage.
Their opponent, the Washington Huskies, is making their second appearance in the College Football Playoff and are hoping to fare better than they did last time. They played Alabama in 2016 and got destroyed. The Huskies started the season off red hot behind Michael Penix Jr and then held on for dear life in the last 6 games before taking down Oregon for a second time to earn this bid.
So what is going to be the deciding factor in this one? It starts with the running game for the Washington Huskies. If they can run with their star back Dillon Johnson against Texas’ strong front, led by T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy II, then the passing game should open up for the star receivers for the Huskies.
Which Quinn Ewers is going to be there for the Longhorns? In the two most important games of the season for the Horns, Ewers was a stalwart. He was the best player on the field against Alabama and the same for the Big 12 championships. He was quite average in the three regular-season games after his shoulder injury though. They will need him to be a superstar in this one to move on.
Washington is no stranger to close games. They have played their last 9 contests all within 10 points, obviously winning them all. One of the toughest things to do in this sport is continually winning close games, and they have proved that they can get it done. I think that the Huskies’ offense may just be too much for the Longhorns and Dillon Johnson wears them down.
