Spain Provisional World Cup Squad Declared by Luis Enrique; de Gea Slipped Down the List

Spain is all set for their 12th consecutive World Cup with the expectation of winning their second title since 2010. They will be confronting fierce competition from 2014 World Cup winner Germany, the Asian underdog Japan and Costa Rica, led by Bryan Ruiz.

Spanish Coach Luis Enrique declared a 55-player provisional squad on 28th October, which excluded David de Gea. From this squad, the final roster of 26 players will be made available on Friday, 11th November. For Kepa Arrizabalaga and Iago Aspas, it can be a breakthrough after securing a position on the list.

After being in captivity in the international wilderness since 2020, Manchester United’s David De Gea is set to miss the Qatar World Cup. He was titled the club’s Players’ Player of the season 2021-22.

But this has done little to sway the Spanish coach. Indeed, Enrique has a preference for big-match experience and red-hot talents. The fans heard nice things about Unai from the coach back in June. The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper can end up in the central team easily this year.

Also, PSG’s midfielder Fabian Ruiz noticeably missed the list. Veteran defender Sergio Ramos and right-back Arnau Martinez, with no international experience, have joined the squad. Ten Barcelona players and only two Real Madrid (Dani Carvajal and Marcos Asensio) players have made the first list.

55-Men Squad

Goalkeeper: Kepa Arrizabalaga (28), David Raya (27), David Soria (29), Robert Sanchez (24), Unai Simon (25)

Defender: Jordi Alba (33), Marcos Alonso (31), Hugo Guillamon (22), Aymeric Laporte (28), Diego Llorente (29), Arnau Martinez (19), Inigo Martinez (31), Sergio Ramos (36), Pau Torres (25), Cesar Azpilicueta (33), Alejandro Balde (19), Dani Carvajal (30), Jose Gaya (27), Eric Garcia (21)

Midfielder: Sergio Busquets (36), Sergio Canales (31), Thiago (31), Gavi (18), Koke (30), Marcos Llorente (27), Pedri (19), Sergio Roberto (30), Rodri (26), Oihan Sancet (22), Carlos Soler (25), Brais Mendez (25), Mikel Merino (26), Dani Olmo (24)

Forward: Mikel Oyarzabal (25), Alvaro Morata (29), Yeremi Pino (19), Gerard Moreno (30), Marcos Asensio (26), Iago Aspas (35), Ansu Fati (19), Borja Iglesias (29), Rodrigo Moreno (31), Pablo Sarabia (30), Ferran Torres (22), Nico Williams (20)

With the names on the sheet, the squad seems to have a well-balanced proposition. For Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, reminders from the golden era, this can be their last World Cup. The youngbloods like Pedri, Gavi, Torres and Ansu Fati have already established themselves as the star players and could play a pivotal role in the games.
