The 22-Grand slam winner Rafael Nadal’s Australian Open venture has faced another blow at the United Cup after he lost to Alex de Minaur in men’s singles.
His defeat in three sets to the Australian team came just after the previous devastating match against Cameron Norrie on the last day of 2022. De Minaur outperformed the veteran player from a set down in the first to secure a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory on Monday in Sydney and delivered Australia a 1-0 lead over the Spanish squad in the contest of group D.
It is De Minaur first win against the second-ranked Nadal after three defeats earlier in the ATP tour.
The current scores suggest Spain is no longer in the competition of City finals as Britain has advanced to the latter stages after knocking down Spain and Australia.
Spain’s performance, especially Nadal’s win drought, has been criticized heavily by the media after consecutive losses. Some hardly believe Nadal would bear any fruit in the long run anymore in the upcoming tournaments.
The startling setback in the first match of the United Cup against Cameron Norrie didn’t seem to tremble his mental preparation. In Tuesday’s game, he looked concentrated, warming up with his forehand and backhand practice. In contrast, his teammates were calm and relaxed when entering the arena.
But with the defeat, rumors started sprouting about his career. The Australian Open may be his last, as injuries have plagued Nadal for the last few years.
Nadal, although the words, has hit back at the organizers of the newborn tournament. The Spanish team debuted in Perth, Sydney and Brisbane this season but was a complete disaster.
Player retreats, hectic game schedules and now, countless draws have brought down the whole team. Naval has much to criticize about the nascent tournament. The loser of the initial game should play against the fresh group, as there is more on the line.
Spain had no chance in the competition after failing to Britain by 1-3. That means the last mixed doubles and five games against Australia were mere exhibitions and meaningless to their scorecard. So he skipped the unintelligible mixed doubles event.
Despite these, Craig Tiley, Tennis Australia chief, defended the accusations asserting that the fame and attention among the enthusiasts that the cup has already generated are astonishing.
De Minaur, until Monday, has no record of beating any world champion. He told the media that this was his much-needed big win, and he will cherish and grab confidence from it.
